Single most popular search term on the computer catalog: "dogs."
My theories:
1. Kids like dogs.
2. Kids can spell the word dogs.
3. Kids like to sit at the computer in the library and that's the easiest thing to think of to type.
Most popular nonfiction dog book: Bruce Fogle's Encyclopedia of the Dog. It runs about $35. I have multiple copies and have to replace it every year or so. It has also been requested as
"The Dictionary for Dogs."
"The Bible for Dogs."
"That big dog book that is falling apart."
My favorite comments from children re: dogs:
6 year old boy: "Does this book have a beagle in it?"
Me: "Let's look in the index. Here we go. Yes, beagles are on p. 135."
6 year old boy: "Good, because my dog's cousin is a beagle, so I need to learn about his cousin."
7 year old girl: "I'm checking out this book called Choosing the Perfect Dog for You. That's because my mom says that when my sister graduates, we are going to replace her with a dog."
7 year old boy: "My friend came over and my dogs liked him better than they like me."
Me: "That made you feel jealous?"
7 year old boy: "No, sad."
8 year old boy: "Well, maybe if you took a bath, your dogs would like you better."
6 year old girl: "The dog on this book cover looks like my dog."
Me: "Oh, do you have a golden retriever?"
6 year old girl: "No, my dog's a different color."
Me: "What color is your dog?"
6 year old girl: "Well, he's black, with some white on his paws, and his balls are red."
