Yesterday a 6 year old girl came in and told me she needed to talk to me privately. She was not her usual smiling self; she looked downright grim. I pulled up a stool as she hesitantly confessed: "You know the rule about how you're supposed to take only one bookmark? Well a long time ago I took two. I've been feeling so ashamed of myself. I feel so bad every day. Now I just want to give it back. I'll never take two bookmarks again."
She pulled a wrinkled bookmark from her pocket. I recognized it as one of the wildly popular scratch-n-sniff ones, this one strawberry scented, from more than two months ago. The students went so wild over them, in fact, that I had to put the rest of the rest of them with my secret stash until I figure out a fair method of distribution.
I told her I appreciated her honesty. And I let her keep it.
